Opening Remarks
Richard Hendrix '74
DFTD Board of Directors Chairman, Richard Hendrix ‘74 opens the Forum with the importance of intellectual freedom and open dialogue at Davidson College. As he reflects on DFTD’s impact to date, shares insights on the current campus climate, he will outline a path forward and emphasize how alumni support can continue to strengthen the organization’s efforts on campus.
Keynote Speaker
Dr. William Winkenwerder ‘76
A nationally recognized physician, healthcare executive, and former public servant, Dr. William Winkenwerder ’76 has decades of leadership experience at the highest levels of government and industry. His distinguished career, including service as Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs, reflects a deep commitment to thoughtful leadership and informed decision-making. Drawing on this experience, he will share insights and speak to the importance of engaging difficult issues through thoughtful discussion.
Panel Discussion
Current students and recent graduates will share their experience at Davidson, offering insight into the academic and social environment they’ve navigated. Their stories highlight how DFTD has supported their ability to engage in meaningful conversations, challenge assumptions, and approach complex issues with greater confidence

Connie Buehler '82
Active in the national Alumni Free Speech Alliance and a member of the DFTD Board of Directors, Connie Buehler ’82 sees the impacts of active alumni involvement at Davidson and beyond. Additionally, her professional experience as a recruiter gives her a unique perspective into the challenges students face after graduation, including the growing trend of delayed career launches, offering insight into how campus culture, skill development, and employer expectations intersect in today’s job market.
