Davidson College Board of Trustees Alumni Election

Another Choice: Write-in Candidate Barclay Briggs '24

Don’t forget to vote by August 26! Find the email from Davidson College with the subject line “Shape Davidson's Future: Cast Your Alumni Trustee Vote Today!” to cast your ballot.

Recently, alumni received an email from Davidson College to vote in the Alumni Trustee election.

The ballot you received includes the option to write in a candidate for the open seat election, and the Board of Davidsonians for Freedom of Thought and Discourse encourages you to vote for our fellow board member, Barclay Briggs ‘24.

While the selected candidates are distinguished in their own right, we think that the College would be well served at this time if a recent graduate well-informed on freedom of expression, viewpoint diversity, academic standards and cost issues at Davidson were to be elected to the Board of Trustees.

This election is an opportunity to ensure that alumni leadership reflects not only experience but also a clear understanding of the current campus climate. At a time when conversations around intellectual freedom and open dialogue are increasingly important, it is especially valuable to have representation that can speak directly to these issues.

Personal Statement:

Like so many Davidson alumni, I love Davidson College. I love the Davidson community, the opportunities that Davidson offers students, Davidson’s approach to athletics, and so much more. Davidson played an irreplaceable role in my development, and it is the setting for so many of my fondest memories, and for that, I am forever grateful.

However, in addition to all that is good about Davidson College, I also recognize areas in which Davidson can improve—in particular, upholding standards of academic rigor, working to foster a climate of fearless and free deliberation, and improving viewpoint diversity within the faculty, to name a few.

As a more recent graduate than other candidates, I have a unique perspective on these glaring necessities and current campus developments, and I hope to use that perspective to support the flourishing of Davidson College. I would be honored to serve as a Trustee, and I appreciate your consideration as you vote.
